How To Apply

Applying to this program is a three-step process:
1. Mandatory Study Abroad 101 Module
All study abroad applicants must complete this requirement before starting their program-specific application. Students are also encouraged to attend a Study Abroad 101 Workshop.
2. Submit a Cal Poly Application

The first step is to apply to this program through Cal Poly’s abroad.calpoly.edu system, where we screen you for Cal Poly’s minimum eligibility requirements for participation in this program. The Cal Poly application will ask you to submit the following supplemental materials:

  • Letter of Recommendation from a Cal Poly faculty member
  • Personal Statement
  • Official Transcript
  • Copy of your Passport

The coordinator for this program will review all applications after the application date has passed. Students will then be contacted to participate in a mandatory applicant review session. If approved, you will be nominated to the host university and will be allowed to move onto step three of this process.

3. Submit a Partner University Application
After being screened and approved by Cal Poly to participate in this program, you will complete an online application with HM prior to the due date listed on their application.
4. Travel arrangements
Students make independent travel arrangements.

Preparations

Visa
If the semester abroad lasts longer than 90 days, a student visa for Germany is required. The student visa is issued by the German embassy or consulate in the student’s home country. The applicant must usually submit certain documents, including proof of enrollment from the German university, proof of sufficient financial resources for the stay in Germany, proof of health insurance, and possibly other documents depending on the requirements of the embassy or consulate. It is important to find out about the application process and the required documents well in advance, as it can take some time to process the visa application.
Insurance

To be able to enroll at the university and/or to apply for your residence permit, you, as an exchange student, must have sufficient (either statutory or private) health insurance. Travel health insurance does not qualify as sufficient health insurance! Please read through the Health Insurance document for detailed information.

Flights And Arrival

It is important that you book your flights early. The price and travel costs vary depending on which airport you fly. We recommend booking your flight to Munich International Airport. When entering Germany, it is important to have all the important documents at hand. Hochschule München provides a Welcome Service for international exchange students to ensure that your arrival in Munich and settling into life at the university go as smoothly as possible. The Welcome Service is organized by the International Office. You can sign up for it in your application at HM. A few weeks after your acceptance at HM, your mentor will get in touch with you.

Accommodation

When you apply to HM for the semester abroad, you have to look for off-campus housing yourself. Finding accommodation in Munich is difficult but not impossible. The majority of students here rely on private accommodation.

Options include flat-sharing (approx. 500-600 € per month), privately run residence halls (approx. 400-600€ per month), or single-apartments (700-1000 € per month). Hochschule München receives a very limited amount of rooms (service-package rooms) from Studierendenwerk München that we allocate to our exchange students. To find off-campus housing, we recommend using the App “WG Gesucht” or applying at “Studentenwerk München.”

Registration of Residency

Every student must register his/her place of residence at the relevant registration office in Germany within 14 days upon arrival. Please register and deregister at the Kreisverwaltungsreferat (KVR). You need to make an appointment. More information can be found on the website of KVR Munich.

Financial Support

Cal Poly students may be eligible for financial aid if enrolled at least half-time in a Cal Poly study abroad program. Even if you have never received financial aid, you may want to investigate the possibility of receiving financial aid when you study abroad. You can connect with the Cal Poly Financial Aid Office via email at financialaid@calpoly.edu.

Financial aid is limited in the summer. Awards typically consist of any unused loan amounts from the previous academic year. Consult a Financial Aid counselor for details.

Requirements

Start by reading the Fund Your Study Abroad Experience handout to see how financial aid can be applied to study abroad.
